Delivering next generation research technology

Our Engineering and Technology Program works with researchers to deliver next generation marine instrumentation solutions including autonomous systems, biological platforms, environmental imaging, moored sensor systems, science software and data tools, and vessel connected systems.

This team also provides technical and scientific support for researchers on board our research vessel (RV) Investigator, from shipboard operations through to data processing and dissemination.

Our Engineering and Technology Program offers world-leading expertise to deliver technical and operational solutions for the broader marine community, as well as CSIRO researchers.

Argo robotic floats

Argo robotic floats are helping to improve our understanding of the world’s oceans.

Seafloor mapping

We're using the latest technology to collect information about the sea floor, so industry and environmental managers can make better decisions about managing undersea resources and ecosystems.

Acoustic ocean monitoring

Commercial fishers are helping marine scientists to map and monitor food supplies available to top order predators in the oceans around Australia.

Hydrochemistry

Our hydrochemistry team conduct research into chemicals and particles that can be found in seawater, and its not just salt.

Oceanographic Calibration Facility

Our Oceanographic Calibration Facility offers to calibrate a wide range of oceanographic instrumentation with a level of accuracy consistent with world’s best practice.

Information Data Centre

Our Information and Data Centre (IDC) manages a range of marine datasets including much of the data collected by the Marine National Facility over the past 35 years.

Saildrone

CSIRO and ocean technology start-up Saildrone are collaborating to deploy state-of-the-art unmanned marine monitoring vehicles to study our oceans and climate.

Deep tow camera

Seeing into the dark depths of the ocean is impossible without specialised equipment built to withstand the high-pressure deep-sea environment. CSIRO engineers and technicians have developed a camera system to capture images from these unexplored environments.

DeepBRUVS

Our specialised deep-water video system attracts deep water creatures, mainly fishes, by programmed baiting and then captures 3-D images so we can study the make-up of deep water communities.

CRAGS Camera System

Our remote, self-waking, gigapixel camera can be deployed in the harshest of environments and produces a zoomable high resolution timelapse video of monitored areas of up to three square kilometres.
