The award-winning Young Indigenous Women's STEM Academy is the first program of its kind in the world. It is an investment in a generation of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander female leaders, role models and game changers in STEM fields.
The STEM Academy is increasing the number of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander females undertaking STEM studies and careers. We do this through targeted, long-term support, tailored to set young women up for a success. We provide mentorship and support from high school through various pathways, including university, and into graduate employment.
The STEM Academy is part of the movement to increase the representation of Indigenous women in STEM careers, especially for those living in regional and remote areas who may not be able to access quality STEM opportunities in their home communities.
Integrating Indigenous voices and knowledges into program design
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have an ongoing relationship with science, technology, engineering and maths that dates back thousands of years. We co-design the program closely with the young women and their communities, ensuring knowledge, technologies and processes and cultural needs are an integral part of the program.
Led by an predominately Indigenous team of women, the STEM Academy provides a culturally safe and supportive environment for young Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander women to explore their STEM interests and identity.
Empowering a generation
Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander women are already doing amazing things in STEM. For example, Taylah Griffin, a proud Gangulu woman, was the first Aboriginal person to graduate in electrical and aerospace engineering in Australia. Taylah is just one of the STEM professionals we are proud to have associated with the STEM Academy and CSIRO Education as a mentor and role model.
The Academy can help you do amazing things too. We're here to empower a generation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander female leaders, role models and game changers in STEM and you can be part of it.
